Maintain Hardwood Floors for Years

Use these four easy tips.

Hardwood flooring is one of the sturdiest and most long-lasting flooring materials available. But taking the time to maintain hardwood and avoid moisture extends its life and keeps it looking fantastic for longer. After your hardwood flooring installation, take these steps to maintain your investment.

Take Off Your Shoes

Shoes inevitably track in dirt, sand, snow, salt, and lots of other materials from the outdoors. Over time, these materials start to degrade the look and finish of your hardwood floors.

One of the easiest ways to maintain hardwood is to simply take your shoes off when you come inside. And if you prefer not to walk around in socks, putting mats at your front and back door removes much of the damaging material before it touches your new floors.

Dust Before You Mop

Maintaining hardwood is a lot easier if you remove dust, dirt and pet hairs before you wash your floors. Mopping when these materials are still on the floor degrades the quality of the wood over time. The easiest step is to simply use a dust mop or vacuum to pick up the fine particles, and then to use your preferred method for washing the floor.  A Swiffer is easy to use and is easy on your hardwood floor.

Wash Naturally

There are lots of products on the market for cleaning hardwood floors. And while many of them work, one of the best and most affordable ways to get a thorough cleaning is to simply use vinegar and water. Mix one cup of white vinegar with one gallon of water, and then use a clean mop to clean your floors as you normally would. Another tip to maintain hardwood easily is to mop with the grain of the wood. That way, if there is a streak, it will be less noticeable once the floor dries.

Watch for Spills

It is fine to wash your hardwood floors, but in general you want to avoid moisture as much as possible.  Tweet This

That’s why you should clean up any spills as soon as you notice them. These spills can damage the finish and possibly even affect the wood. Use a cloth that is soft and dry or damp, and then work your way from the edge of the spill to the center.
